چکیده

Optimal accentuation of a sentence involves accentuating a minimal set of words which in a given context suffices for understanding the entire sentence. We propose a model of the interpretation of incomplete or not entirely recognized utterances. Using this model, we determine which constituents of an utterance have to be accentuated given a certain context. 1. Optimal Accentuation Our basic assumption is that accentuation helps to ensure the listener’s recognition of certain words. These words are sufficent for interpreting the entire utterance in a given context. The recognition of other words is not necessary for understanding. We propose a model for the interpretation of not entirely recognized utterances, like acoustically disturbed utterances, and of intrinsically incomplete utterances, like constituent-answers and telegrams. Speakers want listeners to understand their utterances. They utter their sentences in a way that leads the listeners to the intended interpretations. Accentuation is driven by the listeners’ interpretative needs. It is one means of following Grice’s maxim of manner ([2]) “Be perspicuous!”. For the correct interpretation of an utterance, the listener has to be aware of its context. Knowledge of the current issue or question under discussion (qud) (cf. [1]) is needed in order to derive the exhaustive meaning of an utterance. Consider example 1.1:

Accentuation, Uncertainty and Exhaustivity – Towards a Model of Pragmatic Focus Interpretation

This paper presents a model of pragmatic focus interpretation that is assumed to be part of a complete language comprehension model and that is inspired by Levelt’s language processing model. The model is derived from our empirical data on the role of accentuation, prosodic indicators of uncertainty and context for pragmatic focus interpretation. In its present state, the model is restricted to...

Prosodic and Individual Influences on the Interpretation of Only

This study investigates factors that influence the interpretation of ambiguous sentences containing the word only. When only appears preverbally in simple SVO constructions, it can be interpreted as associating with the direct object, the verb, or the entire verb phrase. An auditory sentence completion task was used to probe native-speaking English listeners for overall biases in the interpreta...

Disambiguate or not? - The Role of Prosody in Unambiguous and Potentially Ambiguous Anaphora Production in Strictly Mandarin Parallel Structures

It has been observed that the interpretation of pronouns can depend on their accentuation patterns in parallel sentences as “John hit Bill and then George hit him”, in which ‘him’ refers to Bill when unaccented but shifts to John when accented. While accentuation is widely regarded as a means of disambiguation, some studies have noticed that it also extends to unambiguous anaphors [7-10]. From ...

Coupling dialogue and prosody computation in spoken dialogue generation

We introduce a concept-to-speech (CTS) system that generates prosodic structure compositionally, in a spoken dialogue agent architecture . Representations from the semantic interpretation, task modeling, and dialogue strategy selection components drive the computation of accentuation, pitch accent type selection, and choice of melodic contour, respectively. These principled couplings of dialogu...

Pitch accent, eyebrows and context – effects on the exhaustivity of answers?

We describe an interpretation study on the effect of accentuation, eyebrow movement and context on the exhaustive interpretation of answers. Our material consists of video recordings of nine German speakers who read dialogues with embedded question-answer pairs in which the answer constituted the pragmatic focus of the utterance. For the dialogues we varied the context regarding (un)certainty a...
